Fan Xiangtao serves as the Research Fellow at the International Centre on Space Technologies for Natural and Cultural Heritage under the auspices of UNESCO (HIST) and Professor of CBAS. He is also the Director of CBAS Department of Digital Earth Science Platform. He is mainly focused on Digital Earth system construction and key technology research. He launched the first Digital Earth Prototype System of China in 2004, On the basis of the Digital Earth Prototype System, a new generation of digital earth platform was developed in 2010, which has been evaluated by international experts as "the platform is the most fully functional digital earth system in the world, making China one of the leaders in technological innovation in the field of Digital Earth”. Prof. Fan is the chief designer of Digital Earth Science Platform of Big Earth Data Science Engineering Program (CASEarth) of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), which achieved the integration processing from rapid data planning and organization, data service sharing, information collaborative analysis, accurate simulation and evaluation to scientific decision-making and reporting for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He has extensive experience in Big Earth Data for sustainable development, and keep promoting the innovation of the digital earth technology. He has published over 85 academic papers and book chapters and won the first prize and the third prize of Beijing Science and Technology Award, the second prize of Natural Science Award of Ministry of Education, and the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award.
