The 2nd Huangshan Dialogue on UNESCO Sites and Sustainable Development, organized by HIST under the Auspices of UNESCO and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and supported by the Mt. Huangshan Administrative Committee, opened with key messages that the more than 1,800 UNESCO designated sites worldwide, including World Heritage sites, biosphere reserves and UNESCO Global Geoparks are impacted by climate change and can play a significant role in understanding, adapting to and mitigating these impacts. In a video message, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova stressed the event's contribution towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the SDGs, as well as UNESCO's new updated Strategy for Action on Climate Change. Over four days, culminating in a field visit to Mount Huangshan World Heritage site and UNESCO Global Geopark on 15 September, more than 150 participants, including 46 international experts, discussed exchange, cooperation and new initiatives linking UNESCO-designated sites to strengthen global understanding of climate change.
