
Abstract: The advancement of archaeology relies not only on the progress of fieldwork and the accumulation of data, as well as on the exploration of relevant theories and methodologies, but also on the extensive application of contemporary science and technology. Today, remote sensing archaeology has evolved from aerial to spaceborne platforms, extending from the visible spectrum to infrared and microwave electromagnetic bands. Furthermore, it has transitioned from onsite archaeological investigations to virtual laboratory research, integrating remote sensing technology with geographic information systems, navigation and positioning technologies, geophysics, geochemistry, and other related techniques. This represents the defining characteristic of spatial archaeological methodologies. This volume is the first monograph worldwide dedicated to the theory, application, and development of spatial archaeology. It synthesizes the theoretical research and practical applications conducted by the key researchers of the UNESCO International Centre on Space Technologies for Natural and Cultural Heritage (HIST) in the field of spatial archaeology. Beginning with the workflow and principles of spatial observation technologies, and in conjunction with the historical development and fundamental techniques of archaeology, the book provides a comprehensive and systematic introduction to the theoretical foundations, research methods, and application cases of spatial information technologies—including remote sensing—in cultural heritage studies. It also proposes a conceptual framework for spatial archaeology as an emerging discipline.
